Offer of the Tourist Program

All tours depart from and return back to the Prague Congress Centre. Participants are advised to block the seats on the respective tour in advance. Tickets can be picked up or purchased at the Tourist Programme counter in the registration area of the Conference at the PCC.

Tours will be organized by the minimum participation of 15 persons.

Prices are in EUR per person.

TOURS IN PRAGUE

Grand City Tour with Visit to Prague CastleGo to the schedule
Duration: 4 hours
Description: This sightseeing tour explores the beauty of Prague Castle and the Old Town. In 4 hours the guests will see the most famous sights of Prague, commemorating its thousand-year history. Our bus will take the guests up to Prague Castle; the tour includes a walk around the Prague Castle complex with St. Vitus' Cathedral, the Royal Palace and St. George's Basilica. Then the guests continue by bus to Parizska Street, on foot to the Old Town Square with its famous astronomical clock and then back to the bus again.

Jewish Ghetto and Old Town SquareGo to the schedule
Duration: 4 hours
Description: The tour presents the Jewish Town through the prism of history and legend. The guests will walk through the fascinating Jewish Ghetto with its unique 15th century Old Jewish Cemetery (with 1200 tombstones), the Jewish Museum, the Pinkas, Spanish, Maisl and Klaus Synagogues and the ancient Gothic-style Old-New Synagogue - the oldest synagogue still in use in Europe. The most frequently visited tombstone in the cemetery is that of Rabbi Löw, who created the legendary Golem, a mythical person which should have protected the Jewish Quarter. After visiting all the synagogues the tour continues with a slow walk to the Old Town Square. The Old Town City Hall with its famous Astronomical clock and other monuments will be shown to the participants. At the end there is a walk through the Old Town streets to the bus.

Lesser Town & Charles Bridge, Old TownGo to the schedule
Duration: 4 hours
Description: This mostly walking tour introduces the most important sights of the Golden City. The bus will take guests to Lesser Town main church St. Nicolas - the largest and most beautiful Prague Baroque church decorated with life size gilded statues of Saints and many rare Baroque altars with beautiful pictures. The tour continues on foot through the Lesser Town and across Charles Bridge (one of the oldest stone bridges in Europe, decorated with an open-air gallery of 31 Baroque statues). You then reach the Old Town Square and after visiting the Old Town Hall representative rooms and Tower with a Chapel and show of 12 Apostels in the Astronomical clock you will continue through Old Town street to the historical building of Charles University, pass the Estate Theatre (W.A. Mozart conducted his operas here incl. the world premiere of Don Giovanni). The tour will finish at the Wenceslas square - the main Prague boulevard and shopping area. Individual shopping in the city centre possible.

Description: The Chairman of IAU Joint Discussion 1 (Cosmic Particle Acceleration) and Astronomer Royal from Scotland, Professor John C. Brown, extends an invitation to all GA participants to participate in this event, celebrating the marvellous beers of the Czech Republic, in a world reknowned beer venue. The event will include some expert words about beer in general and about Czech beer in particular, dinner and unlimited beer, and (for some) a tour of the brewery. Only a limited number of participants can be registered for this event - 250 in total for the beer and dinner and only 90 for the brewery excursion.

Restaurant "U Fleků", where the event will take place, is without doubt the most famous Prague pub. Everyone who has come in has kept in mind, and moreso on the tongue, a delicious and unique memory of "U Fleků" 13° lager. Up till The lager continues to be brewed according to ancient recipes, though in a newly furnished setting, and with the same care as in the time of our great grandfathers. The "U Fleků" brewery already celebrated its 500th anniversary since it was founded in 1499.

Palaces and Gardens in the Lesser TownGo to the schedule

Description: Walking tour around the beautiful Prague Baroque Gardens and Palaces. The tour starts on the Hradcany square in front of the entrance to Palace Gardens. The guide will take the guests through the gardens on the southern slopes of Prague Castle:Garden of Eden, Garden on the ramparts, Ledebourgh Garden, Great and Minor Palffy Gardens. There is a marvellous view across the roofs of Prague and Petrin Hill from all of these gardens. Down below the gardens guests walk past the most beautiful Prague Palaces: The Wallenstein Palace - seat of the Senate, Seminar street - seat of the Parlament, Malostranské square dominated by St. Nicolas Church, Kaiserstejn Palace and Lichtenstein Palace. Then the guests will enter the Vrtba Palace with the Vrtba Garden - the most beautiful Prague Baroque Garden, which has only recently been newly reconstructed. The walk will end at the Wallenstein Palace Garden which has been newly opened after long reconstruction. The garden belongs to Czech Senat and is richly decorated with Baroque statues, Grotto cave, lake with fish and swans and peacock birds. After visiting this garden the participants will go with the guide to the Malostranska metro station, where the tour finishes.

TOURS OUT OF PRAGUE

Excursion to Ondrejov Observatory / Astro. InstituteGo to the schedule

Description: The Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the Czech Republic. It is the direct successor of the Observatory of the Jesuit College, located in the tower of the Clementinum in Prague, where observations (principally of a meteorological character) were begun in 1722. After the emancipation of the Republic from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the institute was renamed the "State Astronomical Observatory". In the meantime, in 1898) a private observatory owned by J. J. Fric was built in a small village called Ondrejov, located 35 km (20 miles) south east of Prague. This small observatory was donated to the state Czechoslovakia represented by Charles University in Prague in 1928. The site of the Ondrejov Observatory, at an elevation of 500 m in the relatively unpolluted environs of Prague, proved to be very well chosen. After the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences was established in 1953, it was merged with the State Astronomical Observatory to create the Astronomical Institute, now belonging to the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

We invite the parcitipants for the excursion to this Ondrejov Observatory. We show you around the historic part of the observatory as well as its technical equipment. Small refreshment will be offered. The capacity of the excursion is limited - maximum is 50 people per one departure.

Trip to Konopiste ChateauGo to the schedule
Duration: 6 hours
Description: This excursion will take the guests to one of the most beautiful chateaux in Bohemia, situated about 50 km south of Prague. The original castle was built in the late 13th century in the style of a French fortress. It was later also the home of the successor to the Austrian throne, Ferdinand d'Este, whose assassination in Sarajevo sparked off World War I. At present the chateau offers a fine display of historical weapons, hunting trophies, furniture, china and Late Gothic sculptures and paintings. A beautiful English park surrounds the Chateau. Visit to the chateau and garden will be followed by lunch at a nearby folk style restaurant.

Trip to Castle Karlstejn & Nizbor Glass FactoryGo to the schedule

Description: A trip to the imposing Gothic castle built 650 years ago on a picturesque site in the heart of deep forests. The castle was built by Emperor Charles IV to become the treasury of the coronation jewels and holy relics. The Imperial Palace contains an exhibition of Charles' life and dynasty; a tapestry version of the Luxemburg family tree can be seen in the Luxemburg Hall. Lunch will be served in a nearby restaurant.
The excursion continues to Nizbor Glass factory where famous Bohemian Crystal is made. The company owner, Jiri Rückl, now continues the family tradition of manufacturing and marketing high-quality household and decorative glassware, perfume bottles and liquor sets and other beautiful objects in crystal and glass. There will be an opportunity for shopping.

Description: This excursion introduces the wine country north of Prague. Guests will visit Melnik Chateau with its grand furniture and paintings collected over 300 years by the Lobkowicz family, who are once again the owners today. Then the tour continues to the 13th century wine cellars where there is a unique opportunity to taste the local wines produced by the Lobkowicz family: Müller Thurgau, Ryzlink, Tramin and Burgund. The tour will be concluded by lunch at the Chateau Restaurant.

Description: Participants will visit the workshop of the Caesar Bohemia glass factory at Josefodol where they will have a unique chance to get acquainted with the way how the products of this traditional Czech trademark have been created. There will be also an opportunity for shopping. Lunch on route.
The tour then continues to the Gothic castle of Cesky Sternberk which towers above the Sazava River on a romantic cliff top about 45 km south of Prague. Inside the castle there is a unique collection of weapons, 17th century graphic art and period furniture.

Medieval Town of Kutna HoraGo to the schedule

Description: The tour includes a visit to the ancient mining town of Kutna Hora, established in a silver mining area in the 13th century. The town, about 65 km east of Prague, has many well preserved medieval and Baroque buildings. The 14th century St. Barbara Cathedral features colourful frescoes and the UNESCO protected Miner's Chapel, named after the silver miners who financed the construction of the cathedral. In the town centre lies the site of the former royal mint, where Italian artisans crafted silver Prague groschens in the 15th century. Groschens were a currency used throughout Europe. Lunch at the local restaurant.

Trip to Kokorin CastleGo to the schedule
Duration: 7 hours
Description: Kokorin castle was built in the second quarter of the 14th century, probably by Hynek Berka from Dubé. During the Hussite wars it was burned and abandoned, nothing being preserved of its original decoration. The whole castle complex underwent general reconstruction in the Romantic style at the beginning of the last century. The charming surroundings of the castle have inspired numerous poets and painters. Lunch will be served in a local nearby restaurant.

Description: Morning departure to the West Bohemian town of Plzeň, known for its world famous Pilsner Urquell beer. The tour includes a visit to the Pilsner Urquell Brewery itself, where you will have the opportunity to see the way beer is made. A traditional Czech lunch will be served together with Pilsner beer at the 'Na Spilce' brewery restaurant. Then you will leave for Kozel Chateau - a beautiful example of Neo-Classical architecture - where you will be able to see its period collections of furniture and china.

Description: This tour will take the participants through the hop-growing area to the west of Prague to the West-Bohemian spa metropolis Karlovy Vary - world known spa with 600 year long tradition of treatment of the diseases of digestive tract. Walking tour leads along the spa part of the town with 12 hot mineral springs and several colonnades, beautiful parks and splendind Baroque church of St. Maria Magdalena. Lunch at local restaurant will be followed by the departure to Marianske Lazne - charming spa town with numerous mineral springs, large parks, recently renovated colonnade and famous "Singing Fountain".
